Grand Valley State had a solid performance competing at the Grand Rapids Open at Houseman Field on Saturday. The Lakers will next split their squad and send part of the team to the Cougar Classic on April 7 in Edwardsville, Ill. at 10:00 a.m. and also to the Bulldog Invite in Big Rapids, Mich. at 11:00 a.m.
Katie Mandziara finished in third place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.37. Valerie James placed sixth as she ran a 26.95 and Ashley Jager ran a time of 26.96, which was good for a seventh place finish. James placed seventh in the 400 meter dash (1:03.23) and Jenn O'Shesky finished in sixth place with a time of 1:02.88.
Brandi Murrell ran the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:57.77, giving her a third place finish, while Shannon Bowers took sixth with a time of 5:08.62. Ali Beach took sixth place in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 17.38, while Merradith Doyen ran the 400 meter hurdles in a time 1:11.93 for a fourth place finish.
In the field events, three Lakers placed in the top six in the high jump. Maegan Doyen finished in second place with a mark of 5-05.00, while Heather VanderSlik placed fourth (5-05.00), and Meredith DeVries took sixth with a mark of 5-03.00. GVSU also had three athletes place in the top seven in the shot put. Emily Fox took fourth place as she threw a mark of 40-11.75, Mary Bogner recorded a toss of 40-07.00 for fifth place, and Kathie Posa posted a mark of 39-00.50, which was good for a seventh place finish. Bogner also finished in fourth place in the discus (122-05) and Fox placed seventh with a throw of 119-06.
