Entering the final round of the SVSU Cardinal Invitational, Grand Valley State and Wayne State were tied for first place out of nine teams with a 294. The Lakers fired a 287 in the final round to seal the victory over the Warriors by five strokes. GVSU will compete in the GLIAC Championships hosted by the University of Findlay on Oct. 8-9. The Lakers are looking to defend their title that they claimed last season in Midland, Mich.
Sophomore Matt Malloure paced the way for the Lakers win as he shot a one under par, 143 to finish in third place in the tournament. He recorded a 71 in the first round and a 72 in the second round. Senior Josh Orler finished in seventh place with a one over par, 145. He had a 75 on Friday and came back to shoot a 70 on Saturday. Junior Tyler Hering tied for ninth place overall with a two over par 146. Hering recorded a 72 and a 74.
Sophomore Josh Burt shot a five over par, 149, which tied him for 16th place. Burt posted a 78 in the first round and came back to shoot a 70 in the final round. Freshman Cameron Thomas tied for 34th place with a 154 as he fired a 76 and a 78.
Grand Valley State will look to defend its GLIAC Championship title on Oct. 8-9 in Findlay, Ohio.
