GVSU Finishes Second in Great Lakes Regional, Earns Spot at Nationals

Grand Valley State University shot a 300 on day three, finishing second overall at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional and earning a berth in the NCAA National Championships in Houston, Tx. The Lakers' three-day total of 887 was two strokes behind first-place Indianapolis and two ahead of Ferris State. Mike Basinski shot a 221 to finish in a tie for sixth place and lead GVSU. This will be GVSU's first appearance at the national championships since 2000.

After entering the second day of competition tied for first place, Grand Valley State University took sole possession of the top spot following three under-par performances. Tyler Hering, Josh Burt and Josh Orler all shot one-under 71 on the day to help the Lakers to a total score of 587, which is three strokes ahead of second-place Wayne State.

The Grand Valley State men's golf team will compete in the NCAA DII Great Lakes Super Regional May 5-7 at Red Hawk Run Golf Club in Findlay, Ohio. The top team from each region within the super regional will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II Spring National Championships Frestival in Houston, Texas.

Grand Valley State took home top honors as a team with a 36-hole total of 578 (+2), while Josh Orler won medalist honors with a 141 (-3) by defeating Wayne State's Joe Juszczyk in a two-hole playoff. The Lakers were 12 shots clear of second place Wayne State (590) and 14 shots ahead of Indianapolis' 36-hole total of 592 (+16). The Great Lakes Regional #3 was played at The Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind. GVSU will now be the top seed in the NCAA DII Great Lakes Super Regional that will be held May 5-7 at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.

Josh Orler shot a first-round 67 (-5), while Tyler Hering carded a 68 (-4) to lead Grand Valley State into first-place after 18 holes at the Great Lakes Regional #3. GVSU shot a team score of 282, eight shots ahead of Wayne State (290) and 11 in front of Findlay (293). The second and final round will be play Monday (April 21).

Grand Valley State shot a second-round score of 293 and went on to claim top honors at the Ashland Invitational with a 36-hole team score of 595 (+19). The Lakers' 293 second-round score was the low team score of the tournament. GVSU erased a four-shot defecit to Ferris State after day one to claim a seven-shot victory. The Lakers will next be in action April 19 & 20 at the third and final Great Lakes Regional. GVSU is currently ranked #1 in the latest NCAA DII Great Lakes Regional rankings.

Grand Valley State is in second place after carding an opening round 302 (+14) at the Ashland Invitational. The second and final round will take place Monday (April 14). Freshman Mike Basinski is tied for second after carding an opening 18 score of 73 (+1), while senior Josh Orler is tied for eighth after shooting a 75 (+3). Junior Tyler Hering shot a 76 and is tied for 11th, followed by sophomore Matt Maloure's first-round total of 78. Sophomore Josh Burt carded a 79.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced that Josh Orler has been named the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week. Orler led Grand Valley State to a first-place finish at the Parkside Invitational on March 29-30. Orler shot a 139, four strokes ahead of the next competitor, to finish first overall at the event.

Grand Valley State Places Two on All-Tournament Team at Tusculum Invitational

Grand Valley State finished tied for second in the 2008 Tusculum Invitational on Sunday, placing two golfers on the All-Tournament Team. Josh Burt and Tyler Hering both shot a one-under par 70, which tied them for fourth place, to earn the all-tournament honors at the rain-abbreviated event. The Lakers will be back in action this weekend, March 15 and 16, at the Northern Kentucky Invitational in Butler, Ky.

Grand Valley State University shot six strokes better in the second round of the Richard Rendelman Invitational to finish in eighth place. Josh Burt finished with a +5 147 to put him in a tie for 23rd place as the top-ranked Laker. As a team, GVSU shot 293 on the second day, ahead of their 299 from day one, finishing at 592 overall.

Josh Burt and the Grand Valley State men's golf team are in 10th place after round one of the Richard Rendleman Invitational at Catawba College. Burt shot a +2 73 as the top Laker in the field, holding down 18th place. As a team, Grand Valley State shot a 299, just two shots out of eighth place.
