Brandon Barnes and Anthony Adams Head to NFL Rookie Camps

Not long after DB Brandon Carr became the highest Laker selected in the NFL Draft on April 27, 2008, two other Grand Valley State football players have earned the right to participate in rookie mini-camps with NFL teams.

Defensive Back Brandon Carr Selected By Kansas City Chiefs In Fifth Round Of NFL Draft

Grand Valley State defensive back Brandon Carr was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the National Football League draft Sunday afternoon. Carr was the fifth pick in the fifth round. Brandon is the first Grand Valley State football player to be drafted since WR David Kircus was drafted in the sixth round of the 2003 draft.

Laker Defense Claims 48-14 Win In Black & Blue Spring Game

Grand Valley State concluded spring drills Saturday afternoon at Lubbers Stadium with its annual Blue & Black game. The Laker defense claimed a 48-14 victory over the offense. The game is scored using a non-conventional scoring system where the defense scores points based on incomletions, tackles for loss and turnovers. The Laker coaching staff held around 30 players out of the game.

George Barnett Named GVSU Offensive Line Coach

Grand Valley State head football coach Chuck Martin announced that George Barnett has been named offensive line coach for the Lakers. Barnett comes to Grand Valley State after a three-year stint as offensive line coach at the University of Indianapolis. He will begin his duties at Grand Valley State immediately.

Ginn comes to Grand Valley State after spending the last four years as the head coach at North Carolina Wesleyan. Ginn will begin his duties at Grand Valley State immediately.

61 Lakers Named to GLIAC All-Academic Teams Following Fall Seasons

Following the fall athletic seasons, 61 Grand Valley State University athletes were named to their respective GLIAC All-Academic teams. Women's soccer and football both had 15 players named to the teams, while men's and women's cross country earned 13 and eight nods, respectively. Six volleyball players and four women's tennis players also earned GLIAC All-Academic recognition, as well. In order to be a member of the team, a player must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and cannot be a freshman or a first-year transfer.

Brandon Barnes Named 2007 Gene Upshaw Award Winner

Grand Valley State (Mich.) offensive lineman Brandon Barnes was named the 2007 recipient of the Gene Upshaw Award, given annually to the top lineman in NCAA Division II football Don Harris, President of the Manheim Touchdown Club, presented the award at the Valero Cactus Bowl banquet Thursday night.

The 2008 Valero Cactus Bowl has announced its rosters for the 2008 Division II All-Star game to be played at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and three Grand Valley State seniors have been selected. All-Americans Anthony Adams (LB), Brandon Barnes (OT) and Brandon Carr (CB) will participate in the 2008 Valero Cactus Bow.The Valero Cactus Bowl will be regionally televised in up to 8 million homes on Fox Sports Southwest. The selection committee picked from among the best seniors in NCAA Division II football.

Four Lakers Garner All-American Awards

Postseason honors continue to come by the way of the Grand Valley State football program. Seniors Anthony Adams (LB), Brandon Barnes (OT) and Brandon Carr (CB), along with junior Dan Skuta (DL) have all been named to various all-american teams following the 2007 season. GVSU finished the 2007 campaign with a 12-1 mark and advanced to the NCAA DII semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven years. Grand Valley State has won four NCAA DII Football National Championships and played in five title games since 2001.
