Grand Valley State University kicked off the NCAA Tournament on Friday, defeating Wayne State 5-2 in Springfield, Mo. The No. 42 Lakers took two of three doubles matches and then won four of five singles competitions to win the match. GVSU advances to the second round against Drury at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. Starting pitcher Brad Raj tossed a complete-game gem, while 1B Cory Maguire provided the offense with a grand slam in the sixth as Grand Valley State claimed a 5-2 win over Wayne State in a winners bracket game at the 2008 GLIAC Tournament. GVSU now advances to its fifth straight GLIAC Tournament title game set for 12 noon Saturday (May 10) at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. (more)

Grand Valley State University swept Ashland 5-0 on Friday, picking up a victory in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The No. 24 Lakers won all three doubles and picked up the required two singles victories, ending the match one hour into competition. GVSU will play the winner of Drury/Michigan Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m. (more)

Eight Grand Valley State baseball earned All-GLIAC honors it was announced Thursday by the GLIAC office in Bay City. Voting was done among the league coaches. Senior RF Derek Hinke (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), junior LHP Andre Benjamin (Grand Ledge, Mich.) and junior DH Casey Robrahn (Jenison, Mich.) headlined the GVSU honorees by earning First-Team All-GLIAC plaudits.
